Life Sucks? Blame A Witch!

Merry Meet and Happy Weekend Blessings, my Beloveds!!!

So, not so long ago I was asked by someone if our Coven had cast a spell on them because they had been experiencing a string of bad luck.

My response was simple.  "No, we wouldn't do that.  The Universe works to keep things in balance".

What I actually wanted to say was, "No, we wouldn't do that!  But perhaps if your life didn't consist of anger, hatred, jealousy, cruelty to those weaker than yourself and random acts of douchebaggery, you might understand why it has chosen to treat you in kind". Of course, I didn't say that.

That being said, I do believe the Universe and/or the Gods keep things in balance, just not in the way one might think.

Have you ever known a person so negative that they can suck the life out of a room just by entering it?  It's very uncomfortable just being in their company.  If, like the rain, you stand in it too long, you'll find yourself drenched by it.   So is true of those who shine.  The brilliance of their energy shines so that they draw everyone to them.

Not all who experience tragedy or hardship are responsible for bringing it into their lives.  I've seen the most horrendous things happen to the most beautiful of people.  It's difficult to understand or accept.  I've found the most comforting explanation is that this is a necessary part of the soul's journey.  One must live through, process and move past the experience in order to learn and grow from it.

I believe that there are people however, who find it impossible to "move past" their most difficult life experiences.  They hold on to their anger, grief, fear or insecurities and allow them to color who they are and in turn, their entire existence.  In essence, they literally become their worst nightmare.

We all grieve our losses, no matter how great or small those losses are.  Some are easier to move past than others.  But when one can find no plausible explanation for the unexplainable, they may look to place blame where none can exist.   You can't blame death on the dying.  Well, perhaps you can...but to what end?  Physical death is finite, so too will be one's grief should the appropriate help not be sought to work through the pain.

Yet while grief may be a reasonable explanation for negative emotions, there are those who dance precariously through life behaving with reckless disregard for the way their actions impact on others, only to find themselves dumbfounded when an avalanche of shit falls upon them.   And their first inclination is to look elsewhere to place blame....with the exception, of course, being the mirror.

Ah...but the mirror is the one place we can't escape, can we? The gift of ourselves we share with others, for better or worse, comes not from our reflection, but from our soul, the seat of who we are.  We can dress up that image that looks back from the mirror, but inside we are unchanged.  This alone, for some.....should make for many a sleepless night.

And just when you thought a Witch's spell was to blame your misfortune....

Pleasant Dreams!

"... random acts of douchebaggery"?

Are Witches really allowed to write like that? I guess I always imagined you'd sound more... well, Shakespearean. :)

Just stumbled across your blog and it's quite intriguing. I'm sure I suffer from most of the common misperceptions of your lifestyle. I do find all the various "paths" quite confusing. Is there a good place to find a succinct summary of those and how they differ?

Ahhhh...douchebaggery! It's such a great word. It's right up there with "fuckery".

Yes, well as much as I love the Elizebethan language, it's hard enough being a modern day Witch without speaking in Macbethisms! The whole "Double, double, Toil and Trouble" is just not me.

The various paths can be very confusing, even for some who walk them. There are just so many traditions that fall under the umbrella of Paganism.

I offer you a link to Witchvox. They are an excellent "everything
you ever wanted to know about Witches, but were afraid to ask", place to explore.

Thank you! I'm going to check that out.

You are absolutely hilarious, BTW... I love your sense of humor! (which, again, comes as a bit of a surprise... please pardon my preconceived notions).

I am a Christian but I grew up very interested in all things occult, and one of my best friend's grandmothers, who we used to visit, was actually a Scottish witch of (apparently) some renown. She once gave me a little magic book that had a publication date in the 1700's in England. What I mostly remember is that it had the best-smelling pages. :)

Oh, your Grandmother's book! Such a wonderful gift! I think many a Witches book smell this way. I know mine do! I believe it's from storing them with herbs and incense!

Why all the incense anyways? I never understood that. And sadly, the only herbs I'm very familiar with are the ones in the Colonel's secret recipe.

I love the Colonel!

Incense is used for a variety of things. For the most part it's used as a tool to dispell negative energy from people or places.

In ritual, it also serves as a tool of focus. When we're preparing for ritual the scent of incense is a signal that we are about to enter sacred space. It's also said that the smoke from the incense carries one's intentions to the Gods, so it's also used in spellwork.

Then of course, there's the most important thing...ambience! It smells pretty good too! :)

Okay, thanks. I appreciate your patience and answers. One more question, and I guess this might be a popular stereotype I've believed (or wanted to believe), but is nudity still a common element in any of your rituals? Please say yes. :)

Ahhhh...ritual nudity. That's a fine question!

I will say that there are some traditions that practice just the way they came into the World! And that's all I gotz to say about that! :)

Blessed Mabon!

Well if you ever need a middle-aged, not-so-virgin male for one of *those* rituals, just let me know... I volunteer. :)

New Jersey doesn't seem like much of a mecca for witches. I would want to live somewhere like NYC, Salem, New Orleans, San Francisco, Mystic, CT (just for the name) or somewhere in New Mexico (not sure why on that last one; it just seems right).

If you could live somewhere else with a thriving scene of others devoted to your beliefs, where might that be?

I don't know where you are from, but here in New Jersey, in terms of my tradition, it's more quality than quantity.

I've been to Salem, and if it were not for the fact that I'm not a fan of the winters there, I could easily call it home.

However, if I really wanted to learn true core practices, I would definitely say New Orleans. What's practiced there is root work. I believe it is at the heart of where the best of the craft originates.

I live very close to NOLA and there is definitely a supernatural vibe in certain parts. Although once I was in a voodoo shop there and the 80's song "Africa" by Toto came on their muzak. It kind of spoiled the atmosphere! You should come visit!
